TdF
Well...I survived another Grand Tour. I'd like to thank my coach for helping me prepare. My computer, cyclingfans.com and wi-fi for staying consistent. My boss for allowing me to listen to it in the background at work. Also for lengthy discussions each day about the previous stage. A special thanks to my wife for acting interested. Remembering key names and asking me what happened everyday. I am exhausted. "So what will you do now?" you ask. I plan to go on holiday, probably a beach somewhere with no TV, internet access or cycling coverage of any form or fashion. I'll probably read a book, eat lots of cheeseburgers and drink some beer. Put on a few kilos. That is what my coach recommended if I want to be good for the Vuelta a Espana...Horner!

Is this why the beard seems to be popular in the PRO peloton in 2014?

Is this the new July? Is the globe getting warmer? Probably. Let's just call it another gift.

State Road Race Championship

A big thank you to the HealthSouth Race Team for promoting the State Road Race Championship. Job well done! It is also super cool that proceeds are going to the Laura Wooldridge Memorial Fund. Can't say enough about that. So proud to be a part of this great cycling community.

The lumpy course was challenging with a stiff south wind and über warm temps. Three Happy Cows decided to spread the boyz out over the categories hoping to win as many state jerseys as possible. I raced my age group which was the 30-44 race. It can be a little confusing because the goal is to win the overall race but also to win your age group. The color coordinated numbers helped a lot.

The bunch about to drop into the valley.

The early break started from the gun. With a AF guy taking a flyer and one of our guys Bob N in tow. The move ended up being decisive for us. It forced Walmart (the other team with numbers) to work to bring them back and that wasn't until 20 miles or so. Once the catch was made we counter attacked until finally two 3HC's (Jake B/Scott W) and one Walmart (Art H) got away. The peloton was whittled down to just a handful of guys after the attacks. Walmart and 3HC were content with the established break so we stopped working and the pace slowed. When I say slowed...I mean track stand slowed. It was painful. We all had a good laugh about it. The race was on again though once we reached the final climb (5 miles from the finish). I accelerated about halfway up and Jason E (Walmart) locked up. His leg muscle that is. You might have thought he got shot with all the hollering. Cramps are painful. It was comic relief (for the group). I looked back to see Joel R (Zest Cycling) and my teammate Michael K closing. Once we crested the top we realized Scott B (Walmart) was dropped which was significant. So we put it into time trial mode. Joel R was reluctant to work which was the right tactic when out numbered. I drove it hoping to distance Scott B and set up Michael K. On the last wrinkle before the right turn to the finish Michael K jumped and Joel R tried to follow. For a moment I thought he might close the gap but in the last 300 the gap got bigger and Michael K secured the win for our age group. Joel R did a great job given the circumstance. At the end all the guys from various teams got together and talked about the race. That's what makes the State Championship race unique and fun. It's people you see often (racing & riding together) and after the heat of competition we are all just folks who love to ride and race bikes. Good times. Thanks again HealthSouth!

Is the TdF over? Are the Pyrenees harder then the Alps? Tejay podium? Here's what Robert Millar says, "The typical question I used to get asked at the Tour was which are harder the Alps or Pyrenees? and I always said which ever came second because for me that was more important." It only takes one bad day according to Richie Porte. 6 days to go! To suggest that The Shark's (potential) victory is somehow diminished because Froome and Contador crashed out is hogwash.

BCO Needs Your Help!

Here's a great opportunity to invest in the future of cycling in Northwest Arkansas.

bikerkid.png
Over the last year, the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks has been working with the Fayetteville School District and the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation to purchase a fleet of bikes for every school in the district.  The goal was to expand the Bike ED program through the 12th grade so that students will have more time to acquire bike handling and safety skills, be encouraged to ride their bikes to school and for play, and to learn more about the great trails our area has to offer such as those on the Razorback Greenway, Mt. Kessler, Lake Fayetteville, and Mt. Sequoyah.

Thanks to funding from The Walton Family Foundation, Endeavor Foundation, and the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation, the first bikes have been ordered and arrived this week.  This means that we have 520 bikes to help assemble so that P.E. programs can utilize the bikes when school starts!

We need as many people as possible to come out and help, kids are welcome too! We will be assembling bikes in multiple locations in order to get them all done on time. No bike mechanic experience is required as we need help doing everything from unboxing bikes to tightening bolts. Bring your bike stands and tools if you have them.

This week and next we will be assembling 20" wheeled, single speed Specialized bikes at the ALLPS Campus Cafeteria and 24" wheeled, 7-speed Trek bikes at Vandergriff Elementary Gym. If you can setup and adjust derailleurs and brakes we could really use your help at Vandergriff.

After we finish the elementary's bikes, we will start assembling Cannondale bikes for the Junior High's and High School and then Giant bikes  for the Middle schools.

The Saturday Ride 7/19

I decided to take the bunch over to the State Road Race course. A little preview before next weekend. The weather has been nothing short of spectacular this week. It definitely contributed to the good mood everyone seemed to be in. We had a pretty big group show up. It was one of those happy that you crawled out of bed to make the 7:30 ride type of mornings. Good times in good company.

Heading west on MLK/62. The bunch was chatty for 7:30.

The fog was not expected.

Kept getting thicker...

and thicker...

and thicker.

Made for some interesting photos.

After the regroup we were officially on the race course.

At the top of the Wedington Blacktop climb. About 4-5 miles from the finish. Usually decisive in the race.

I think the funnest part of the course is the 10 mile section that runs north. Two great downhills and usually tailwind this time of year.

Oh, except this 'kicker'. Apparently this is the harder climb of the two significant climbs on the course. We took a vote...I lost.

But once on top you ride on the ridge for several miles. They say you can see all the way to the Okie State on a clear day.

Regroup.

Spotted: New shoes from Pearl. P.R.O. Leader II.

Water.

I called an audible and we took a new road (recently chip sealed). A pretty cool cut through. Watch out though. There are some game changer potholes. Take 610 Mateer Rd. and then a quick left on 612 Kinion Lake Rd. or vice versa. It drops you at the base of Weaver hill and Goose Creek Rd. Check the STRAVA map link for details.

Spotted: Dogma F8. New aero road bike from Pinarello.

Italian curves sure look aero.

Let's Eat! Nomads Natural Plate is great recovery food. Click here to find out more.

I think I'm being replaced.

Smitty's Garage is good stuff. This is the the bacon avocado ranch burger. Legit. Click here to find out more. Yeeeessss all I do is ride bicycles and eat food. You got me figured. Let's Eat!

TdF
The 2014 TdF has certainly lived up to the hype. Stage 2 & 5 might as well be Spring Classics. While Peter Sagan's bicycle skills are put on display often with bunny hops, wheelies and sizzling down hill antics, The Shark quietly possesses his own set of skills. We already know he is a great descender but the cobbles of stage 5 proved his skill set is even broader. After 10 stages the rider with the most well rounded skills is deservedly wearing yellow.

The tech coming out of France has been pretty awesome.

Nibali's dropper seatpost. Since they are adding weight to bikes these days why not add something useful. On a long technical descent being lower to the frame would be a benefit. (photo by BikeRadar)

Almost finished with Phil's book. Easy read & very entertaining. Phil manages to keep a sense of humor after so many setbacks while chasing his dream of making it in a cruel sport. Worth a read.

Product Review: Cervelo R3 (Long Term)

Okay so I've been on the Cervelo R3 long enough. It's review time. To keep it simple I've broken this review into three sections. Handling, components & final thoughts.

Quick note: stock wheels (Fulcrum Racing 5.5) were not part of the review. I had to put the Mavic's on!

Handling
The R3 is race handling inspired. Super responsive but not in the twitchy sense. Well balanced comes to mind. I am really impressed with the stiffness of the front end. I like to climb out of the saddle and noticed this immediately. The stiff front end is also great for steering and sprinting. Whether stomping up a short punchy climb or bombing a technical descent I feel comfortable on the R3. This makes me want to push the limits even more. I've been testing cornering characteristics at the local crit series. The R3 corners on rails. Total confidence. The short wheelbase and stiff front end allows me to make micro corrections in the blink of an eye. Keep in mind all my talk of stiffness and responsiveness is married to a incredibly smooth ride. How smooth? How about 3 victories at Paris-Roubaix (six podiums). Opinion: Fantastic all around performance.

Components
The bike is spec'd out nicely but let's get this out of the way. I have had a lot of questions about Ultegra Di2 (electronic) shifting. The ups: shifting is precise. Soooo precise. You will never need new cables and housing. Holding down the shift button allows you to scroll up and down the rear cogs. The brake hoods are really comfortable. Adjusting the derailleur while riding has never been easier. Oh, super cool sound effect when shifting the front mech. The downs: Weight. About a 90 +/- grams compared to Ultegra mechanical. Electronic is more expensive. Final say: Ultegra Di2 is nice but more of a luxury than substantial performance gain in road cycling. I see electronic shifting being more advantageous in cyclocross or mountain biking.

Ultegra brakes are far more powerful then SRAM Rival (previous set up). I mean FAR.

Shallow reach FSA bars. I did not think I would like them. But they are great. A nice transition between bar and brake hoods. The drops are really comfortable. Making for an easy reach to the levers.

The flat(ish) anatomic uppers are great. They might be the most comfortable bars I have ever used. The Lizard Skins bar tape is excellent. Especially for a heavy sweater in July. The tape continues to be tacky even with sweat drenched gloves.

Aesthetic appeal. The gloss black, trimmed out blue paint scheme has garnered more compliments then anything I've ridden. Dear Cervelo, more of this please. Danka!

Subtle blue trim.

I particularly like the blue on the inside of the fork.

Can't really say much about the ROTOR cranks. It works. The weight is standard. I don't like the graphics. A little too busy for me. No issues with the mid-compact gearing.

Size doesn't matter, BBright? This might make you believe otherwise.

Final Thoughts
The Cervelo R3 is an all around performer. Both racer & recreational riders will appreciate the quick handling of this bicycle. You get a sense that the power transfer is direct and efficient. That sensation is married to an overall smooth ride that is most noticeable on cobbles chipseal surfaces. Both racer & recreational riders will appreciate the smooth ride quality. I really like the stiff front end and the responsiveness (jump) when romping up short punchy climbs. To sum it up, the well rounded performance is fantastic. It is safe to say that this is a great purchase for a wide range of riders and skill levels. Probably why it's been the Editors' Choice at Bicycling.com two years in a row. Ultegra Di2 adds a nice touch of luxury. I might save some coin by going with the mechanical group but if you have it go for the Ultegra Di2 and pimp your ride. I can't say enough about the aesthetic appeal. Cervelo is just one of those iconic brands always associated with the top shelf. The paint scheme is dope and like I said more compliments on that then anything else. I really appreciate when a product fulfills what they are saying about it on paper. The R3 meets and exceeds my expectations. This is true of Cervelo products in general. They stick to the numbers and mean what they say. Go test ride one at The Bike Route today!

Here is what's new for the 2014 Cervelo R3
  • sub 1000g frame (size 56)
  • 24% increase in stiffness at the head tube
  • 8%  increase in stiffness (it was already top of it's class) at the bottom bracket
  • reduced drag by 7 watts compared to previous R3
  • 63% increase in aesthetic appeal in new paint scheme (okay, that's my add)

Price: $5000 (Ultegra Di2), $3750 (Ultegra mechanical)

Ozark Cycling Adventures Day 2

After a long day of dirt road glory we switched gears on Sunday turning to pavement for a little road bike action. Shuttling the group 40 minutes south to the Mulberry River. The Mulberry River loop is 58 miles of Ozark goodness and one of my favorite routes in The Natural State.

Dave T enjoying an early morning view with a cup of joe.

Let's Eat! German inspired breakfast.

Time to kit up again.

Smooth pavement was a welcome change.

Hwy 23 a.k.a. the Pig Trail.

The bunch.

It was nice to have a flatter route on tap.

But we always knew the mountains were not far off.

Once you turn off 23 onto 352 there is hardly any traffic.

Rain clouds seemed to like us early on.

The mountains keep getting closer.

Finally we turned back to the hills on 103.

One last dash of rain.

Time...to climb. 3 miles up, the 103 climb.

Huge sweeping switchbacks.

Challenging ramp after ramp.

Thomas U fights off a dark moment.

With some encouragement from Jake B.

Reward for conquering the climb is this 15 mile stretch on 215.

Miles of buttery smooth tarmac. With the turquoise Mulberry River on our left to keep us company.

Ozarkia.

After a quick dip in the Mulberry it was time...

to refuel. Let's Eat!

More details about Ozark Cycling Adventures to come. Excursion #2 is already brewing. Stay tuned...

Here is how STRAVA sees the route.
